Ever heard of Manuka Honey? Well, did you know some of our unique Western Australian honeys contain similar, if not even more powerful health properties. A study found the activity of WA Redgum and Jarrah honey was about 90% greater than the average activity of New Zealand's Manuka Honey (Irish et al 2011).

Honey from WA is renowned for its exceptional quality and purity due to our native flora, but there's more to these honeys than meets the eye. Although comparable with Manuka Honey, WA honey acts and is measured in different ways. One key measure of quality is the Total Activity (TA), which indicates the honeys antimicrobial properties (similar to UMF or MGO in Manuka).

Total Activity - The Total Truth.

The TA scale typically ranges from 0 to 35+, the higher the value, the greater the antimicrobial effect. It is important to note that the TA scale is specific to certain honeys, such as those from Western Australia, and may differ from other honey rating systems such as UMF or MGO used with Manuka Honey.

TA35+ is the highest possible rating. Valid tests from the Australia's National Measurement Institute are currently only able to measure to this point accurately. Why have I seen TA40, 50 or up to 70+ honey advertised you might ask? If someone tells you their honey is rated this high, we simply can not trust the results! Laboratories are not able to be accurate above TA35, and any result higher, may not be from an accredited source.

Jarrah Honey: An Antimicrobial Powerhouse

Derived from the nectar of the Jarrah tree (Eucalyptus Marginata), pure Jarrah honey boasts a robust flavour profile, and is a powerfully active honey often falling within the higher end of the TA scale (20+ to 35+). Pure Jarrah can be hard to find, often mixed with other varieties, and flowering only every 2 years. This honey variety possesses exceptional antimicrobial properties due to its hydrogen peroxide and total phenolic content.
